[nathan&claire] so baby drive slow til we run out of road; in this one horse town, i wanna stay right here.

Considering certain circumstances, a year may pass slowly or quite the opposite. It all depends on how the year is spent. Within the year Claire had been in the city, the days and what made her days dragged by so slowly she wasn’t sure if she’d ever be able to return home to Nathan. However, this year that she’d spent back at home with him didn’t go by so slow. At the same time, it wasn’t passing her by quickly either. Perhaps it was the fact that for once, most everything seemed at ease.

Once Craig paid his little visit and Claire realized what was going on, she was okay. Well, perhaps that was a slight understatement. It would be a lie to say that she was okay. With her “sickness” (as her dad loved to politely put it), she hadn’t reacted wonderfully to the fact her father tried ruining her relationship with Nathan. She was sure that it had taken all Nathan had in him to calm her down and keep her from harming either Craig or her own father. It took her a while to actually begin speaking to her father again, but she wasn’t really one for holding grudges. Odd enough, it took a month for her to speak to Craig again. She didn’t know how or why her dad would influence him to try and “steal” her (as juvenile as it sounds), but to this day she didn’t understand it. Perhaps she never would.

But now, Claire didn’t have any complaints about her life. All was going well, save for the few episodes she would go through, and the fact that her own mother wasn’t getting any better. Sadly, her medication failed to help and unfortunately, she would blow up at poor Nathan half of the time, or she’d end up in a down mood. “Baby, don’t take it personally,” she’d reassure him each and every time. She didn’t want to make it seem like was personal, and she was always afraid that it’d seem that way. Claire knew that she loved Nathan more than life itself, and was sure they’d spend the rest of their lives together. If only their families would fully accept the couple.

Then again, she was sure that wouldn’t stop them. On her side of the family though, she really only needed the acceptance of her father. Her ailing mother was more than okay with the relationship Claire had with Nathan. In fact, she’d informed Claire she sensed there was something going on. She said Claire always had this glint in her eyes, as if there was something she was hiding from the rest of them.

“That glint’s still there, but its different now,” the quiet woman would say, smiling up at her daughter. But even as she loved those little talks she’d have with her mother, it only reminded her of how it wouldn’t be long before her mother would be gone. However, it wasn’t often she thought about it, but for whatever reason it was entering her mind now as she sat in front of her vanity. She and Nathan were going to be going out that night, just for dinner like the usually would do when they weren’t alternating going to family meals.

Chances were since she was going out her father was still going to grill her about it. Whatever, she was used to it by now.

The reflection she saw in her mirror seemed to not be much different. She looked older, slightly, not much. It was hard to believe that soon she’d be pushing twenty. Maybe time really did pass her by quickly. By now, she’d grown her hair and cut it once more. Now it rested just a few inches below her shoulders. Still not fond of make up, she merely wore mascara and some blush. The girl brought the brush to her blonde strands of hair as her emerald eyes wandered to fall on the small orange bottle that was beginning to run low on her medication. As soon as she set her brush down, she took the bottle and popped it open, taking a pill and dry-swallowing it.

Alright, maybe that wasn’t the best way to take it, but she knew that if she didn’t take it she’d end up forgetting. Especially since she’d probably be out for a while, and since she and Nathan were going to be in public, she was sure the pair of them wouldn’t want to go through one of her ‘episodes’. There had been times she’d gone without medication before, but it didn’t end pretty; so it was better that she just take it now without anything to wash it down. Although, she nearly gagged though from the feeling in her throat, but she shook it off.

Claire stood and rummaged to find a pair of flats to put on, grabbing her bag and throwing it over her shoulder before going downstairs. She was ready to slip out the front door without being noticed when she heard the floor creak under her father’s weight. The blonde girl turned around to see her father with a beer in his hand, still in his work clothes. “You goin’ out tonight with Nathan?” He questioned, although this was what he always asked, and she gave her usual answer.

First she nodded, turning around and releasing her hand from the door knob. “Yep, like I usually do, Papa.” She gave her dad a warm smile before stepping over and pressing a kiss to his cheek. “I won’t be late, either. Tell Mama I love her and I’ll talk to her tomorrow.” Claire nearly blasted towards the door, but not too hastily as she slipped out. In all honesty, it was still difficult for her to talk to her father in some ways. The way he spoke about Nathan angered her somewhat. It was like he said her boyfriend’s name with disgust. But she couldn’t do a thing about it.

Claire knew, as she headed towards the Browne home, that she would in fact have to speak to her mother tomorrow. This thought left knots twisting in the pit of her stomach but soon she reached Nathan’s home and headed towards the front door. She rapped her knuckles lightly on the front door and soon his mother was answering the door. Mrs. Browne smiled politely, although possibly not willingly, at the shorter girl. “Hi Claire, come on in,” she said nicely and Claire smiled, walking into the Browne home. “Do you want me to go get Nathan?”

“Naw, that’s alright, Mrs. Browne. I’ll go up an’ get ‘em myself, thanks.” Claire spoke and headed towards the staircase. Reaching his door she tapped on it lightly before opening it, peeking in with that bright smile of hers on her face. “You ready to leave, baby?”

The year without Claire had been hell. Nathan didn’t think that he would be able to make it whenever her father told them that she would have to spend time in the city, away from him. All because they were together. It never made sense to him that their families told their children to stay away from each other. If Claire had any other last name besides Griffith, Nathan was sure that his brothers and parents would love her, because she was such a great person.

Him and Craig had a tussle out in the barn one day. It was all because of Claire’s father, who only brought the boy down from the city so that he could whisk Claire away from Nathan. He had managed to calm Claire down and keep her from doing anything to the city boy, but he wasn’t having any of that. When he heard about that plan, he took the boy outside and taught him a thing or two about the country. You don’t mess with a Browne boy’s girlfriend. They’ll knock you on your ass. Which was exactly what Nathan did, and then he told Claire to send Craig on back to the city and learn how to fight.

Then it was back to loving Claire again. At first, he kept telling himself that things would be better now that their relationship was out in the open. They wouldn’t have to hide it anymore. And in some aspects, it was better. The two of them could go out whenever they wanted and didn’t have to worry about darting off into trees or barns whenever they saw someone come up. But Claire being diagnosed as bipolar made things difficult as well.

They would be having a perfectly fine time when she would start yelling at him, or crying. Maybe any other person would break up with her, say that they couldn’t handle all of that. But Nathan loved her so much, he couldn’t imagine ever thinking that he couldn’t help her out through it all. He just didn’t understand why her father hated him so much for being with her because he stayed with her mother.

That was another thing that changed on Claire’s side of the fence. Her mother had started to get sick. He got upset himself sometimes when he thought about it. She was practically the only adult that approved of Claire being with him. His brother Gregory did, but he was moved off into town with his girlfriend now. David had went to the big city to go to college. The house should’ve felt empty with two of his brother’s gone, but damned Michael was still there. Still giving Nathan hell about going out with Claire. He just couldn’t get over it, and got their father riled up about it fairly often.

At least now they had the decency to not say anything when Claire was around. Nathan had stood up to the both of them and said that if they ever spoke like that around her, he would leave the farm with her and they’d have to scrounge up money to pay for two more farm hands who would probably want higher pay than the two of them.

“Nathan, come help me move this.” Michael called from who knows where. He’d been shifting things around in the house, trying to Gregory’s room turned into his because it was bigger.

“Nope, I’m goin’ out with Claire.” He replied, walking past where he heard his brother cussing him and into his room, shutting the door. Nathan just rolled his dark brown eyes, drying off and pulling some clean clothes on. One of his shoulders popped and he grit his teeth. Sometimes farm work wore you down, which is exactly the reason he was going to eat dinner with his girlfriend. To relax and get away from the smell of cows and the hay that clung to everyone’s clothes.

Nathan sat on his bed, tying up his sneakers as he thought to himself. It was so nice to be able to go out and do things with his girlfriend. Hell, they’d been together since they were fourteen and only this past year had they managed to be seen in town looking at each other. He heard his dad and Michael muttering things outside the door, probably about how he was with the Griffith girl. Nathan just shook his head, going over to dry his hair with the towel he’d had when he came out of the shower.

He’d gotten into plenty of arguments with his family, but each time he told them the same thing. He loved Claire. He didn’t care if she did have bipolar disorder, or that they hated her family. He didn’t care about anything except for her. He’d do anything for her.

When there was the slight knock at the door, he thought it was his mother, seeing as she was the only one who ever knocked around here. His brothers would barge in whenever they wanted and his father never came up into their rooms unless they were sleeping late instead of downstairs eating breakfast. Before he could tell her to come in, the door had opened and he saw Claire come in by the reflection of the mirror. He grinned, trying to smooth down his hair and having to resort to a comb. “’Bout ready, darlin’.” He told her, wrinkling his nose a bit. “Think I can trust ya with some scissors t’morrow? Need a haircut.” Nathan said, finally deciding that there wasn’t anything he could do about his hair and turned to her, kissing her.

“I’m ready now.” He said as he grabbed the keys to the truck off his dresser and walked with her down the stairs. “Be back b’fore curfew.” He told the house, even though he was fairly sure they didn’t care. Holding the door open for her, he let her go through and shut it behind him, walking down the porch. “Where we eatin’ at t’night?”

God, he loved her.

When Claire walked into the Browne house, she was worried that she’d bump into Michael and he’d make some sort of remark about her being in the house. She was used to it by now; she would either ignore him or throw back a snide comment. Lucky for her, though, Michael didn’t seem to be around as she’d arrived in Nathan’s room. The girl laughed lightly as he mentioned her being able to be trusted with scissors. Before she had a chance to answer him, he gave her a kiss and she returned it, smiling. “Oh, I don’t know ‘bout that. We’ll just have to see.” She ran her fingers through his hair, scrunching her nose at him. “Y’mean to tell me that you don’t wanna grow it out long? I mean, that style’s just so in.” Now she’s teasing him, letting a small grin form on her lips.

The pair excited his room and she let her arm rest around his waist. With the mention of curfew, it almost bothered her that they were still stuck at home. Many of her friends from high school had gone off to college. She took a few classes at a community college near the city, and that was just about it. But the thought slipped from her mind when Nathan held the door open for her. Before walking out onto the porch, she left a kiss on his cheek.

Once they were outside of his house, she took his hand now instead. He questioned her and she shrugged. Absently, her thumb brushed across his knuckles as her eyes traveled upward to find his. “Whatever and wherever you wanna go tonight, Nathan,” she said, smiling that bright smile of hers. “I’ll let you choose for once, since we’re actually goin’ out an’ all.” Besides, when they were out, she was sure he let her choose where they wanted to go plenty. “And it’s my treat, so all you gotta do is choose where you wanna go.”

Deflecting the conversation from that, however, she dropped her eyes to the ground before lifting them to him again. “So, tell me ‘bout your day.” Her eyes wandered again, up towards the sky that was beginning to darken slowly. “’Cause I wasn’t around much today.” The thought made her frown, and along with that she made a face. One of those kind of ‘ew’ faces. As much as she didn’t like working on the farm, she didn’t mind it much either when she was able to work alongside Nathan. As long as she was with him, she was alright. She honestly didn’t know how she went an entire year without him.

Fortunately, she hadn’t run into Michael or their father. While Michael was the more verbal of the two about his views on Claire and Nathan being together, the head Browne of the household always gave the girl a dirty look. And Nathan gave one right back. He wasn’t going to have them talk about her anymore, not while he was around. He gave his dark brown eyes a roll, making a face of his own even though he was grinning. “Now you know, darlin’, I don’t like my hair t’be as long as yours. Which’ll probably be the way that it’ll get if I can’t talk somebody into cutting it for me. Can’t do it myself and I’m mighty scared that Dad will take it upon himself to make one of my ears shorter than the other.” He replied, a laugh escaping his lips right after those words.

He walked out of the house easily, hardly thinking about the curfew tonight even though most of the time he grumbled about it. Here he was close to being twenty years old and he still had to come in on a certain time. Nathan had figured up how much money he had over and over again, but it wasn’t enough to go and get a place for him and Claire, not yet. And it’d have to be somewhere that he could drive back to the farm to help out. He wasn’t taking any classes. High school had been hard enough, he didn’t think he could handle college classes. So the only jobs he could take were minimum wage or the farm.

“My turn? Dang, Claire, you know I’ll eat whatever’s put in front of me.” He said, swinging their hand slightly as he twirled the keys around a finger on the other hand. “I’m kinda tired of burgers. How ‘bout a nice big ol’ juicy steak?” Nathan grinned. “An’ since you’re payin and all..” Another laugh came from him. The both of them knew that they would be splitting the check if it was too big.

He sighed when he thought about his day, unlocking the truck and opening the door for her to hop in and slide over. “My day went it’s ol’ usual self. Michael’s trying to move stuff all around the house. Kept trippin over it. Dad, he’s telling me to do th’ same stuff over and over again even though I already done it, or he told Michael to do it. Momma did make some pretty good breakfast though. Think I was th’ last one up from the table.” He told her as he started up the car and headed down the dirt road that lead to town.

“How bout you? Everything alright over there on your side of the fence?” Nathan knew that Claire would figure out that he was talking about her mother, if Claire herself had any problems today. Before she even spoke, he held onto her hand, lacing her fingers with his as he drove with one hand on the wheel.

Claire couldn’t wait for the day when she and Nathan would have a place together. The topic would come up in conversation every now and then, and she always told him that she would help pay. But even t hat amount of money probably wouldn’t help much. Besides working on what was now just the Browne’s land, she worked nowhere else. Even though she wouldn’t mind having a place of their own, she’d rather they be perfectly alright financially making a decision like that.

She couldn’t help but to laugh at him. Rolling her eyes towards him, she said, “Yeah, I know, but I figured you might as well choose somethin’ a lil different.” Yep, just like she thought. She would’ve thrown him an ‘I told ya so’, but decided against it. Instead, she pinched his side with his comment of her paying, leaning into him slightly as they walked down to his truck. “You hush. I can buy ya a steak, but don’t be thinkin’ ‘bout going too overboard.” Claire knew that he probably wouldn’t, especially since she was paying. In fact, she really hoped he wouldn’t have to chip in at all. For once she wanted this to be just her. It was the least she could do, right?

When he unlocked and opened the car door, she smiled and thanked him quietly. Sliding into the truck, she listened to him speak. Emerald eyes watched him and still that small smile was fixed on her features. “Well, your momma does make some of the best food. Or at least, from what I’ve had.” She paused, raising an eyebrow. “And what’s Michael doin’ movin’ everything around?” She was afraid that she had dared to even ask. Nathan’s brother was one male she would just never be able to understand. And men were supposed to be easy to comprehend. Ha!

Setting her bag down by her feet, she absently listened to his question. While she heard it, it was as if once he’d stopped speaking, she’d hardly heard it at all. Claire bit at her lip slightly and sighed. While she wanted to answer, she didn’t. However, she did anyway as her eyes stayed fix on the road ahead of them.

“Could be better. Momma’s not gettin’ any better, really.” There was a flatness to her voice, as she spoke. But as he took her hand, she paused, and a feeling of warmth and contentment washed over her. “Classes went alright today, I just kinda went through em like eh.” The girl shrugged as she let her head fall back onto the seat, her eyes now focusing on Nathan as she smiled lightly. “As weird as it sounds, I’d much rather have been out workin’ with you than sittin’ in the classroms.”

He knew that Claire would help with paying for a place to stay. Nathan figured that a few more months worth of work and they’d have enough to live, definitely not lavishly, but comfortably enough to be able to find a small place to stay for the two of them. Their fathers would probably have a few words to say about that, but by that time, Nathan wouldn’t care. He didn’t now, just obeyed a few of the rules that his dad lay down so he wouldn’t try and kick him out now when he was short of getting enough money in the bank for him and Claire.

Nathan swatted her hand as she pinched at him, laughing and shaking his head. “What? Overboard? I was just gonna get the fanciest steak on the menu. Get a couple baked potatoes, big basket a rolls, get me somethin’ to drink with a real long name that I can’t pronounce.” He stretched his arms out to show how big of a name the drink would have. “That ain’t goin overboard, is it?” All he did was grin at her the whole time he talked about food. “That sound okay though? Know they got other stuff than steak if ya don’t want that..”

“Yes ma’am. My momma does make some damn good food. You’re tryin’ to get me too hungry t’ drive, darlin’.” He spoke, driving along and then giving his eyes a roll and his shoulders a shrug. “Hell if I know what he’s doing. I think he’s puttin’ his stuff in what used to be Greg’ry’s room. He says it’s bigger, but I thought all our rooms were th’ same size. If it is bigger, it ain’t nothin’ but an inch difference. But, you know Michael..” He didn’t even understand the other man, and it was his own brother! “He probably gonna be livin’ at home longer than I am. Don’t no girls wanna move in with him.” Nathan laughed a little. While his sibling had tons of girlfriends, they never lasted very long.

And then she fell silent. Nathan knew that her mother wasn’t getting better. He hated it. She was a great woman, treated him kindly. What tugged at his heart and put fear in him though, was that on down the line in their lives, Claire would be in the same predicament. The Browne never voiced any of that. If he did, he might jinx everything.

He picked her hand up and kissed her knuckles, putting it back down in the space between them. He didn’t want her to be sad on their night out, so he pushed the subject along. “Naw, you don’t wanna be out there in the heat with me. I swear, only reason I ain’t ‘bout five hundred pounds from eatin’ so much is because I sweat it all off b’fore it even gets in my stomach good.” He grinned, glancing at her. “You got them rooms with the nice cold air. If my head wouldn’t explode from all that schoolwork, I’d be in there with ya.”

They chatted more as the drive went on. Finally they made it into town and he slowed down his speed, giving a wave to the police car that was always at the bottom of the hill. Some things never change. “Hope ya got enough money, Claire.” Nathan said right after his stomach growled. “I’m starvin.”

Mr. Griffith really couldn’t do much if he didn’t like that Claire and Nathan would be moving in together. She was an adult now, was she not? Whether or not her father liked it, Claire knew she would anyway.

She couldn’t help but laugh once Nathan finished saying what he would get when they arrived at the restaurant. “Alright, Nathan. Whatever makes you happy, I suppose.” She told him this with a smile as she let her eyes roam over towards him. “That’s not going overboard at all!” She paused, shrugging with his following words. “It’s fine, really. I wouldn’t mind havin’ a steak. I don’t know about you havin’ a couple baked potatoes though, as good as they are.” All this talk of food was getting her hungry now. But thankfully, since the town was fairly small, it wouldn’t be long until they got to where they were going. There was almost nothing about this town she didn’t miss while she’d been away. Almost.

Claire laughed lightly as Nathan spoke about his brother. “That brother o’yours is gonna end up being some sort of basket case,” she mentioned, another laugh escaping her mouth. “Well, he’s probably a nice boyfriend ‘n all at first, but then they see the real Michael... And then they get scared away. I know I would.” Now Claire didn’t mean any harm, but really. Sometimes she just couldn’t find words to describe what kind of person he was. “Only once person would possibly be compatible with him, and that’s my sister. Well, maybe to an extent at least. I don’t know if I wanna see what that relationship would look like.”

A lot of the time, Claire would come to the conclusion that she would most likely end up in the same circumstances as her mother. The thought frightened her more than words could express. Just to think that one day, she’d be bedridden, and possibly in and out of the hospital didn’t make her comfortable. However these thoughts were ones she didn’t dwell on often, and when Nathan took her hand her mind slipped away to other thoughts. A small, gentle smile spread across her lips and the fact he changed the subject seemed to make her feel better. He knew that she wouldn’t want to stay on that subject long.

“Appearance don’t matter much to me, but if you were 500 pounds...” Her voice trailed off and she grinned jokingly towards Nathan. “Honestly, listening to a lecture ain’t that interesting. At least some of the work can be fun, dependin’ on what you’re doin’.” Of course, that usually only meant working with the animals, and even then some of them she was a bit iffy with.

As they spoke and still drove into town, Claire could feel that she was getting hungrier by the minute. Who knew she could have such an appetite. When Nathan waved to the police car at the bottom of the hill, Claire gave a small smile to the man as well. “You ain’t the only one,” she mentioned, turning her eyes to Nathan as she smiled lightly, “an’ I think we’ll be fine. I think I made sure to bring enough to feed your appetite.”

“Well, I didn’ think it was either.” Nathan replied, giving a short nod with laughter going along with it. “Naw, Darlin’, I’m just gonna get one. And put all that stuff on it, cheese an’ all that.” He rubbed at his stomach at the thought. “We really gotta quit talking about that. I’m gettin’ too hungry. Think I feel some drool just thinkin’ about it.” He touched the side of his face, looking at his fingers. “Nope, false alarm.”

The young man just rolled his eyes as she spoke of his brother. “He’s gonna end up bein’ thirty years old an’ still stayin’ with our parents. While all the rest a us got our own families an’ everything.” It amused Nathan a bit to imagine that scenario. Three of the Browne boys all happy doing whatever and Michael still being his annoying self so no woman wanted to settle down with him. “Ain’t nothin’ of him to be scared of. Except if he does get with your sister.” He made a face at the thought of his annoying sibling being with Claire’s sister. “That’d be most frightenin’ stuff ever.”

And he pushed the conversation away from the subject of her mother. It was hard for her, for the both of them to see what might happen to Claire because of the disorder she inherited. His heart would shatter into pieces if he lost her. What Nathan couldn’t understand about Mr. Griffith was that if he was willing to stay with Claire’s mother all these years through her condition, why didn’t he figure out that Nathan would be by Claire’s side with everything? That should be enough for a person not to care of what his last name was.

He faked a look of hurt. “You’re sayin that if I weighed as much as … a tractor you wouldn’ wanna be with me? I thought you loved me, Claire.” Nathan teased, a smile making its way to his face even though he tried to stop it. “Some work on the farm? Fun? Darlin’, I think you might’ve gotten a fever if you think some of that work is fun out in this hotness. I’m ready for everything to cool off so I don’t gotta sweat so much… or do as much work.” He added the last bit, ready for the colder months so he could just do the bookwork instead of all that hard labor. He was good with the business part of the ranch, even if he said he hated Math and anything else that required some brain power.

“I sure do hope you brought enough too. Cause I’d hate to have to wash dishes just to pay the bill.” He grinned as he pulled into the parking lot of the little steak house in town where they bragged about having the best steaks in the county. Of course, the steak house the next town over boasted the same thing, but Nathan had to agree with the restaurant right here. “C’mon now. I hear them rolls callin’ my name.” He shut off the truck, unbuckling his seatbelt and stealing a quick kiss as he hopped out of the vehicle. Nathan waited up at the front, grabbing her hand as he lead the way inside the building and waited for someone to come up and show them an empty seat.

Quickly, Claire imitated gagging herself with her finger, shuddering to the sheer thought of his brother and her sister getting together. “Naw, don’t even joke ‘bout that.” She laughed, shaking her head as her emerald eyes flitted over towards him. “Their children would be like the devil’s freakin’ spawn...” She mumbled this slightly, though loud enough to hear. She threw in a wink before she turned her eyes back to the road. Absently, she thought about it for a second: Michael ending up with her sister. It would probably never happen, considering they both practically share the same thought capacity. “Not only that, but I’m sure they’d be pretty stupid, between both Beth and Michael.”

Claire laughed gently as she looked out her window, stringing her fingers through her blond hair. Silence fell between them; it was never awkward. Most people complain about silence, how awkward it is. But when it came to her and Nathan... the silence was peaceful. It was like they didn’t even need to talk. Plus, it was probably better, as she was sure she didn’t really want to carry on the conversation of her mother. The drive continued on and soon they arrived to the restaurant and she turned to Nathan as he spoke to her, lifting her eyebrows. She let out a bellow of laughter – it probably sounded much too loud coming from a girl of her size.

“Baby, baby, baby...” she started, unbuckling her seatbelt and jumping out of the truck. “I do love you, no matter what... but... I mean, well...” She bit at her lip, elaborating on what to actually say. “We won’t have to worry about you bein’ the size of a tractor, ‘cause I wouldn’t let you get to that size!” Claire finally concluded, smiling widely as she looked towards him. Linking hands with him, she shook her head, patting his arm with her hand. “If those rolls are callin’ your name, I think you’re the one with the fever.” Claire teased him, standing on her toes to press a kiss to his cheek.

They waited a while before the hostess came up to them, showing them their way to a booth. It wasn’t too crowded, surprisingly, considering it was nearing the weekend. “This is okay, right?” The nervous teenager asked and Claire nodded her head, “Yeah, it’s fine.” The hostess proceeded to set the menus on the table as Claire released Nathan’s hand from her grip, sliding into the seat opposite him. Her stomach grumbled and she laughed, shaking her head as she rubbed her hand over her stomach. “Dangit, even I think I can eat a horse tonight.” Grinning, she lifted her eyes to Nathan, tilting her head to the side slightly. “An’ don’t worry, we won’t have to be doin’ any dishes. All we gotta worry ‘bout is makin’ sure it’s the best steak in the country that we’re eatin’.” Which, although it was delicious, she didn’t know about it being the best.

Nathan laughed glancing at her while she mimicked gagging herself. “I know. Gave me shivers jus thinkin’ bout it after I said it. Can ya magine?” He made an awful face once the idea settled in of their siblings being all lovey dovey. Even though he didn’t think that it was possible, it still brought along some awful mental images. “That’d be some kids full a hate n’ stupid, that’s fer sure.” He agreed with her, falling silent.

That’s another reason it so great to be with her. Claire didn’t ever try to force the conversation just to be able to hear herself talk. He could sit there in the quiet with her for hours, just enjoying her company. That was probably something left over from the years that they had to hide from everyone. It wasn’t like the two of them could be loud and laugh and play while they were trying to skirt around being seen by any of their family. He glanced over her while he drove, smiling to himself. To think, just a few more months and he would have enough money saved up to go ahead and ask her to marry him. Or at least go and find a place to live together somewhere. But he knew that their families wouldn’t be keen at all at them living together. Oh well, they’d have to get over it. Gregory lived with his girlfriend and they weren’t married yet. Of course everything was different when it came to Nathan and Claire.

His eyebrows were lifted high as she laughed, waiting for her to finish a sentence to explain what she was trying to say. Then he just chuckled, patting his stomach. “Aw, darlin’. Keepin’ me from m’ dreams.” He joked, smiling still as she kissed his cheek and he walked over to open the door for her. While they waited to be seated, he swung their hands back and forth, watching someone’s meal pass them by and taking in a deep breath. “Smells so good. They don’t sit us down, I’m fixin’ to start eatin’ the furniture.” He lowered his voice so just she could hear, not wanting any odd looks from the people that had come in behind them.

But thankfully they were seated before he could follow through with his words. Opening the menu, he smiled at her words, searching through until he set the menu down, shaking his head and looking solemn. “Claire…. M’sorry. They ain’t go no horse on the menu. You wanna go somewhere else?” He finally laughed, making a face at her as the waitress came up again, getting their drink orders and then walking off. “I know what I want. Can you make up your mind b’fore the waitress gets here ‘gain?” He had shut the menu, setting his hands on it and tapping his fingers against the laminated menu. “I been thinkin’.” Which could either be dangerous or a good idea, depending on Nathan. “’Bout… half a year, n’ I’ll have enough money saved up so we ain’t gotta live with our parents no more.”

The female never was sure of where she stood on the topic of living together before marriage. Sure, there was the argument that it readied you for marriage, but Claire was sure she and Nathan wouldn’t even need to worry about that. Claire was comfortable with him and all of his quirks. Plus, she wasn’t picky or the type to nag. She didn’t care if someone left the cap off of the toothpaste or if there were articles of clothing strewn here or there. Although, when it came to her and Nathan, Claire didn’t care much of what either of their parents though, she knew how touchy her own parents were about a couple living together before marriage. They were especially iffy when Brittney had moved in with her boyfriend (although, they were engaged now); Claire wouldn’t even want to imagine how they would react if she told them she was moving in with Nathan.

When he told her there was really no horse on the menu, Claire looked up, feigning a look of sadness. “No horse? Guess we can’t be eatin’ here anymore then if they don’t have any horse on the menu!” She spoke in an almost melancholy fashion, shaking her head as her eyes still continued to skim the menu. “An’ they ain’t got no furniture on the menu either, so I don’ know if you’re gonna find anything that’s quite to your likin’.” Claire teased him as she looked up briefly, tucking a strand of blond hair behind her ear.

Claire took her sweet time looking for food, tilting her head to the side every now and then. She hummed a light tune to herself as if she were in her own world. It was when Nathan spoke to her did she look up once more, eyes widening a bit. “Patience is a virtue, Nathan. An’ I got plenty of time! Don’t rush me.” She stuck out her tongue jokingly and retreated back to her menu, and seconds later it was down on the table. “Alright, I’m done. Y’happy?” Claire looked at him, and he almost seemed nervous, in her mind. She almost asked if he was okay when he began talking. When he said he’d been thinking, Claire grinned, laughing to herself a bit.

“I’m glad you been usin’ that brain of yours!” She slipped in before he started speaking again, before her direct attention was on him. Claire took in his words, thought them over and over as she bit her lip. She reached out and touched her hands to his, rubbing her thumb across his knuckles. “You don’t have to use all your own money. I mean, I can pitch in some, but...” Sighing, she looked up, her green eyes locking with his dark ones. “I don’t know. I mean, I ain’t against it or anything, but I was kinda hopin’ we’d get married first... And I can’t even fathom how big a fit my daddy would throw.”

Moving in together before getting married was just frowned upon down in the south, but of course, that didn’t stop people from doing it. To Nathan, it didn’t really matter to him. He loved Claire, he knew that he was going to marry her, who cared which came first? As he rolled the thought around in his head, he listened to her, laughing and shaking his head. “Aw, really? Maybe we can find somethin’ that’ll taste like horse just for you here. That way we ain’t gotta get up an’ go searchin.” He smiled broadly.

Even though he did love her, he still worried that she would have one of her episodes. There were times that he got so heartbroken because he just didn’t know how to help the love of his life when she was sobbing or going off into a fit of rage. Nathan knew it made her feel terrible by the way she would apologize over and over again. Thankfully, so far since her return from up north a year ago, she hadn’t had any sort of outbreak in public. If Claire wasn’t feeling good, Nathan would suggest going somewhere private for the two of them to spend their time together.

The young man laughed softly as she hummed a song, recognizing the tune but knowing he couldn’t remember the words for the life of him. “Patience ain’t in my vocabulary when it comes t’ supper, darlin’. I think m’ stomach’s gonna start gnawin’ on itself if ya don’t hurry.” He put his hands on his stomach, rubbing it as he played along with her.

His foot was tapping nervously underneath the whole time he told her the little thing that he had been thinking about since the drive to the restaurant, waiting for her to respond. Nathan was holding his breath as she spoke, finally letting it out in a big puff as she spoke about her daddy. “I was jus thinkin’ that we’d get a place t’ stay first b’fore goin and gettin’ married. I mean, I know how much it means round here to get married first but… that’d be more savin’ up. We’d have t’ wait longer an well, like I said a second ago. Patience ain’t a big word in my vocabulary.” Nathan gave his two cents in the matter, chewing on the inside of his bottom lip. “An your daddy is gonna throw a big ol fit no matter what we do first. Both of ours will fer the simple fact they still don’ like this whole idea of me n’ you being together.” He traced along the table’s grain, glancing up at her. “But, whatever you wanna do, darlin’. I just gotta figure it all up t' see if we got enough money.”

He was hoping that she didn't want a huge extravagant wedding with everyone having napkins shaped like origami swans and an ice sculpture like he used to overhear the girls they went to school with talking about back in high school. That would just cost more and more money which would mean the date where they could live together would just get farther and farther away. "I mean... I really don' think we'll be gettin' no help money wise from our parents. Less your momma talks to yer daddy n' Greg'ry or my momma talks to mine." Once Nathan's mother had met Claire a time or two, she really didn't seem to mind the fact that her youngest son was dating her husband's rival. Though, of course, Nathan had a sneaking suspicion that she thought it was quite romantic having come across some bits of old poems and the like in his mother's handwriting dated from before any of the Browne boys were born. "So, I--"

Whatever he was going to say was cut off as the waitress came up with a hesitant smile, bringing their drinks and then asking, "ya'll ready t' order?"

ooc; I, er, made it a little longer in case you've noticed.

So far, Claire had gotten a hold of how to keep herself from blowing up completely in public. She wasn’t quite a fan of publicly humiliating herself or anyone else she was with, which usually meant Nathan. That’s why she was especially careful about taking her meds before she went out; the few times that she had her ‘episodes’ while in public, it had been up north and with the friends she’d made up there. Not only did she make herself look a fool, but some of the others hadn’t been very appreciative. The one that had always been helpful during those times were Craig, but Claire hadn’t spoken to him since paid her a visit after she’d arrived home. What a messy, messy time that was.

“Now, that’s a bit extreme, don’cha think? I don’ think your stomach is really capable of doin’ somethin’ like that! That’d be kinna disgusting...” Claire shuddered at the thought, crinkling her nose a tad. But now, the topic got a little more serious than stomachs gnawing at themselves due to severe hunger. Listening to his words, she brought her hands back to herself, resting them on each side of her on the leather seat. Absently, she drummed her fingers against the seat, but stopped once she caught herself. Biting on her lower lip, her green eyes rose to look up at him. “I know you ain’t patient, an’ I’m okay with that... but, I dunno, Nathan...” Claire, in all honesty, didn’t know what to say.

Where did she stand, what did she think? Sometimes she didn’t know, and right now, she really didn’t know. “It ain’t gonna be no big extravagant thing... I don’t want big, and this town is a bit too small to be havin’ any sorta big weddin’ ‘round here.” Trying to lighten the topic, she smiled gently. “Whenever we do get married, Nathan, it ain’t gonna matter ‘bout the cost or anythin’, ‘cause it sure as hell ain’t gonna be expensive. Especially since my daddy’s gotta pay for it, and you know how cheap he is.” Now, she laughed gently, running her fingers through her blond tendrils. Her smile never faltered as she looked down and looked back up at him, “Don’t be worryin’ bout it. I’ll be helpin’ with the expenses, no matter whether we get married first or just get an apartment to stay in b’forehand.”

As he spoke about not getting any help, Claire started to think about it... and Nathan was right. Maybe her daddy would refuse to pay, and they were left having to go to some stinky chapel without a reception. Now, as she said, she didn’t want anything big... But of course it was a day that she wanted to remember as a good one. “I’ll talk to my momma... She wouldn’t mind helpin’... I think it’s just both our daddy’s that’ll need convincing.” Claire shrugged; she knew that both their fathers were never fully going to accept it, and she had come to terms with it long ago. But she really never thought about what would happen when it came time that she and Nathan were to marry.

With all these thoughts running ramped through her head, it took her a second to realize the waitress was standing there. Claire looked up almost in a daze and smiled, apologizing and nodding her head. “Err, yeah, I’ll just have cheeseburger...”

“How’d ya like that cooked?”

“Medium, please. An’ I’ll take a baked potato with that instead of fries.” Claire replied, handing over the menu to the waitress as the girl now turned to Nathan.

As she leaned back in her seat, Nathan forced himself to stop fidgeting. He just couldn’t help but move when he was nervous. Or well, any time really but at times when he had something serious to discuss, he tapped his foot or his fingers against something. The young man only nodded when Claire said that she didn’t know. He shouldn’t have brought it up yet to start with. “S’okay darlin’. I’m jus so ready t’ get outta th’ house, and I kinda assumed ya didn’ care if we was married or not first.” But he figured out differently by talking it over with her. As much as it was something he didn’t like, Nathan would just have to tough it out and wait for the two of them to finally be able to live together—husband and wife or otherwise. Claire’s hesitance to agree made him accept that he wasn’t going to be moving out of his house in half a year.

However, he did smile when she mentioned that the wedding for them wouldn’t be big. “Won’ be big celebration wise. Ya know everybody’ll be gosspin’ bout it fer months. I mean, a Griffith n’ a Browne gettin’ married?” Nathan could already see tons of people coming up with all sorts of things with their imagination as to what their wedding would be like. Their relationship had been the talk of the town when she was sent off to live with her aunt. Some people claimed they knew that with amount of kids from the two families, there were bound to have been two of them that were rebellious enough to go against their fathers. Others were just shocked that Nathan and Claire would risk practically being abandoned by their families all for the sake of love.

He snorted as she said that her daddy was cheap. That was a bit of an understatement in Nathan’s opinion, but he kept his mouth shut on that matter because she brought up another one. “I wanna be able t’ pay for most of it, darlin’. Outta my own pocket. I ain’t got nothin’ else to be doin cept work. You gotta go n’ pay fer the classes you’re takin. You worry bout all a that first. Cause you gettin’ more education’s important.” That was something else that worried him. What would Claire do after she got through with those college classes? Would she want to stay here in this little town forever? There wasn’t much that Nathan was good at, but taking care of a ranch was one of them. Yet, if Claire wanted to move, he would pack up everything and go along with her, even if his heart ached to be back on the farm. It would hurt much worse being away from his love.

The waitress cut in some of their conversation and he paused, giving his order for a big juicy steak with a baked potato as well. He licked his lips at the thought of eating something so good as the waitress walked off and Nathan turned his eyes back over to the woman he loved more than anything, even steak. “I dunno. I jus don’ understand why your daddy hates me so much. I do everythin’ I can t’ make you happy n’ shouldn’t that be enough?” Nathan had tried often to wrap his head around the reasons why their families hated each other, but … he never could figure it out. The idea of loathing someone just for their last name was beyond him.

Claire didn’t blame in the least for wanting to move out. She herself was itching a bit. Things were almost tense at home what with her mother sick and her father always on edge about God only knew what. It was probably a mixture of her mother, Claire’s dating Nathan, and the Browne’s having taken their land since he couldn’t afford it. And in all honesty, Claire was afraid that he’d blow up at anything, at any given moment. “I know y’are. I’m sorry, Nathan. I just... I just don’ know right now, at this very second.” She quirked a small smile and shrugged her shoulders. But now she felt this ache welling up inside her heart and it wouldn’t falter. She bit at her lip gently and rubbed her hands over her knees, as if trying to ease that feeling away from her.

Chuckling gently, Claire shook her head at the remark about the other townspeople gossiping about their marriage. “Darlin’, I’m sure they’re still gossipin’ ‘bout when it first came out we’d been sneakin’ around.” Thus, it finally hit her. Maybe all she was worried about was giving people something to talk about. Sure, she didn’t care most of the time; but, at the same time, it wasn’t one of her specialties to continuously ignore the talk around the town about her and Nathan. How stupid was she, so worrisome about something as petty as that. “Elope.” She blurted the word out with a smirk on her face as her eyes locked on Nathan. The word was quiet, though; she was sure neighbors or family friends would be around somewhere and she didn’t want them listening in on this conversation especially. “We can elope! I mean, they’ll neva really know, an’ we can move in together without worryin’ much, and I can help with the expenses... I don’ want ya to have to pay for everything, and don’ be pullin’ the ‘Well, I gotta be a gentleman’ excuse.”

The words had almost spilled from her mouth and she couldn’t stop. Sure, eloping was probably one of the most irrational, spontaneous, impulsive things to do, but it seemed right. All they needed was a witness and somewhere to actually get married, and they could always have an official wedding later on, right?

“Ohh, I don’ gotta worry ‘bout those classes much. My momma’s helpin’ me pay for those. I’m ‘bout ready to settle down, no matter if I’m in college or not, Nathan. You realize we been together for just ‘bout seven years?” One brow quirked as her smile widened and slowly that ache was fading away. Good thing, because for a second she was afraid she’d be experiencing one of her more dramatic mood swings, and she couldn’t deal with that right now. “I promise that when we get married, I won’ be stoppin’ my education, Nathan. I love ya, but not that much.” Now she teased him, her smile never wavering as she tilted her head to the side the slightest bit.

Mentioning her father now, Claire pursed her lips in thought then un-pursed them, running her fingers through her hair. “Ya know, I think he likes that ya make me happy. He’s comin’ round to it, slowly. Very slowly.” She laughed gently and shook her head. “My daddy’s stubborn and your daddy’s stubborn. They were raised like that by their daddy’s an’ they probably didn’t understand either for a while.” She didn’t know how long this rivalry had been in their families, but now she felt as if slowly, it was going to fade with their being together. The Brownes and Griffiths would eventually have to come to some sort of agreement, wouldn’t they? Claire sure hoped so.

“It’s all right.” He said, shaking his head slightly as she apologized. “I don’ like waitin’ for nothin but if you tell me to, I gotta.” The corner of his lips turned upwards, giving a hint of a smile. “Unless, ya waitin’ for some other boy t’ go an ask ya to marry him. Got somebody on th’ side now, darlin’?” He teased her, lifting an eyebrow in her direction inquisitively. Nathan attempted to smooth everything over with what he had brought up. He already decided that he would let it drop now and bring it up again in a month or so when he had even more money in the bank. Maybe not to move in together, but if they had enough to get married, since she was so keen on doing that step first.

The Browne lifted his shoulders in a shrug as he pushed around the napkin-wrapped silverware that the waitress had set down when she gave them the menus. “I don’ think they talk bout us that much anymore. I mean, there’s more stuff than that ‘round here t’ go gosspin bout.” He tried to think of the perfect example, maybe somebody going and having a baby before they were married, but he couldn’t think of any while his stomach was growling. Nathan was taking a sip of his drink when he heard the soft word escape her lips and looked at her oddly. “What about a antelope?” He asked, mis-hearing the word until she spoke again. Well, it took him a second after that too because he thought she said something about cantaloupes. Then it hit him what she said. “Elope?” Nathan repeated it just as quietly, leaning forward like the booth they were sitting in would signal something that was worth gossiping over.

He chewed on the corner of his lip, thinking it over as the words spilled out of her mouth. If they did go off and get married without no ceremony, would it be easier? They wouldn’t have to worry about getting money for a wedding or all of the fancy stuff that went along with it. Their fathers wouldn’t have any room to protest because they could just go and get married one weekend and come back as husband and wife by law. “That somethin’ you wanna do? Go off n’ get married without tellin nobody?” He asked her, watching her movements to try and determine if she was really serious about this or if she was in one of her manic phases. He had read up on bipolar disorder over the year and knew that when Claire would be in one of her up moods, she would want to do things that normally she wouldn’t even think about. The thing was, to decide if eloping would be one of those or not. “I mean, our fathers’ll be mighty pissed they find that out..” He trailed off as she stated that he wanted to be a gentleman and pay for everything, a smile coming to his face, but he didn’t comment on it.

“Let’s sleep on th’ idea, darlin’. Ain’t like we can get up n’ go do it right this minute no ways. Specially since I drove all th way to town to get a steak.” Nathan laughed slightly, holding up his hands and counting on his fingers to figure out just how many years they had been together. “Huh.. That means we known each other fer…thirteen, fourteen years. That’s over half our lives n’ most of that we had t’ be all secretive bout it.” He reached over, picking up her hand and kissing her knuckles. “Glad we ain’t gotta do that no more.”

“You just keep on goin’ to college. I’ll keep on workin’. Our families’ll keep on bein stubborn but that don’ matter. Like I told yer daddy b’fore, I’m gonna marry you an there really ain’t nothin’ that can be done about it.” Nathan stated in a serious tone, nodding firmly. “They’ll just have t’ get over all a this hate or whatever it is cause hell. Ya think they’d understand that we got hard heads just like them when it comes t’ stuff.”

ooc; blaaah.

Perhaps it was quite the irrational idea, she thought. But once Claire got an idea into her head, she was fairly dead set. It probably was an outcome of her disorder, this idea of eloping, but so far it didn’t really sound so bad. Claire had rolled her eyes at Nathan with him thinking she said something about an antelope. But when he finally said something and questioned her, Claire gave a slight shrug. Her eyes dropped to the table. Her finger began to trace along the lines in the table. “I guess so; I don’t really see nothin’ wrong with the idea.” Hope lit her eyes as she looked up to see his face. Claire could tell he wasn’t really taken by the idea as she had been. It was the easy way out, she realized. Sure, she would have to deal with hiding this from her father at least, but her mother would understand completely.

“Blah, blah, blah,” Claire mumbled when he mentioned their fathers being anger. “When aren’t they angry? Ya just said so yerself. They’ll be upset no matter what, they ain’t gonna reconcile.” Once more there was something welling in her chest. Go away, she yelled internally. Don’t creep up on me like this, not now. “They ain’t gotta find out!” She hissed, leaning in so that the others in the restaurant wouldn’t eavesdrop on their conversation. “We can go off, get married, move in together, which yeah they’ll be mighty pissed off about”—she mimicked him, smirking—“and eventually have a real ceremony when we can afford it.” Now, she leaned back easily into the seat, a simple, sweet smile settling on her lips.

She herself was amazed how she could go from slightly manic to being pleased with herself in such short a time. Even then, she had hardly noticed it.

For once, she thought, she didn’t want to think rationally about something. Claire didn’t want to sleep on this, think about it, or whatever it took. But despite her impatience, Claire knew that ultimately, Nathan was right. They couldn’t up and leave at the moment to go get married – but she would want it soon. “Alright, then, baby,” she started, leaning back towards the table now. “I guess you can have yer steak an’ then we’ll head out and elope.” She winked, laughing lightly purely at the thought of doing such a thing.

Maybe it was the risk factor, she contemplated. Of course, she wasn’t really one of those “I’m going to live on the edge!” kind of kids. Then again she thought they were kinda stupid. The only risk she had taken was hiding her relationship with Nathan from her entire family. Her thoughts interrupted by his words, a slow, warm smile spread across her features once he took her hand into his own. Somehow, after all this time, butterflies still seemed to flutter manically whenever he kissed her, or touched her like that. “It was kinda nice, in a way, if ya think ‘bout it. Kinda romantic. Very Romeo and Juliet. Just promise me ya won’t go and die, alright?” Claire laughed, remembering how they’d recited that play many times up in his barn, or anywhere for that matter. She was sure she still had the booklet in her room somewhere...

The girl almost snorted when he was so serious, nodding his head so firmly. Her brows furrowed and she did the same, nodding her head once. “Good! ‘Cause I couldn’t think of marryin’ someone else, t’be truthful.” She smirked once more, rubbing her thumb across his knuckles slowly. “An’ don’ worry. The hate’ll subside over time. I think eventually they’ll realize how stupid they were. Everybody has that point in their life, I think.”

An amused expression came on Nathan’s face as Claire mumbled underneath her breath. It made him laugh whenever she acted like that, like it didn’t matter what was being said because her opinion was going to get through whether whoever she was talking to liked it or not. Her stubbornness was one of the things that Nathan liked so much, it went well with his. “Darlin’, I’m pretty sure they’ll find out we went off n’ got married when you don’t come home t’ sleep an gotta ring on ya finger.” He grinned, pointing out the obvious things to show that they had eloped.

But he sat back in the seat, crossing his arms over his chest and looking off to the side—his thinking pose. It did make a bit of sense, eloping. It was a compromise now that he was sitting there and running the idea through his head. Claire didn’t want to move in with him until they were married and he wanted to without going through all the mess of a wedding while he had the money for it. The waitress come up with their meals before the conversation could go any further and Nathan sat up straight, thanking the woman and going to take a bite out of his steak but laughed instead. “I think places to go n’ get married are closed this time a night, Claire.” The young man responded, grinning a bit in her direction.

The conversation slowed as the two of them ate, but Nathan just had to speak with her. “We’re better than Romeo n’ Juliet though. We got more goin’ for us like you goin’ to college an me gettin pretty good money for workin on the ranch.” He stated, sucking down all of his drink and setting it down on the table until the waitress walked by. “An don’ worry, I ain’t gonna be dyin as long as you stay alive.”

“I think… if we find somewhere that’ll marry us. An’ then, we’ll figure out what t’ do from there.” He said after a silent few minutes. “Cause ya know, if we try t’ get somebody t’ marry us here in town, they’ll go an call our parents and they’ll know b’fore we even say I Do. So if we take about a day off thinkin about it. Then we go searchin for somebody to do th’ whole ceremony thing for us, then we’ll have decided if that’s the thing to do or not.” The Browne spoke, looking up at the girl he loved. It was a rational way of doing something irrational, to him at least.

If they let the idea of eloping rest for a couple days and then during their hunting to find a good place to get married, then if they had any doubts, they would come up. “An, ya know, we prolly gotta find a place t’ live too, darlin’. I don’t wanna be married n’ have a wife an be askin her momma if she can spend th’ night over at my parents house with me.” He smiled a bit at that thought, lifting his eyes to the waitress as she came by and refilled his drink, topping off Claire’s before going off to fill someone else’s. “Does that sound all right? What I jus’ said about all that? …. An.. you want dessert? I gotta hankerin’ for some choc’late pie.” Nathan appeared so laid back that the conversation drifted easily from sneaking off and getting married to decided if Claire wanted to share a piece of dessert with him. But really he was nervous about if she would agree to the things that he said.

Reluctantly she sighed, the action almost admittance to Nathan being right. A small smile formed across her lips as she looked at him. Lifting her hand, she ran it through her blond hair. “I guess you’re right,” she said and shook her head. Part of her still really enjoyed the idea of doing something against their fathers’ wishes – again. They had already been together so long and she didn’t like the idea of waiting too much longer to be able to marry Nathan. “We could always look around first for a place to live, ya know? I mean, this -- .” Just as she was about to mention eloping, the waitress returned with their food, and Claire sealed her lips. With a small smile, she thanked the woman and began cutting her own steak. Just as she took a bite, she looked up to see Nathan laughing and listened as he spoke.

Claire shrugged lightly, swallowing her food before she spoke. “Well ya never know. I hear in Vegas, they got ‘round the clock weddin’ chapels.” Of course, there wasn’t the slightest chance that they could head to the other side of the country and so soon. She would prefer to stay in the state – but there was no way that the chapel could be so close to town. The one thing Claire would be afraid of would be her father finding out from someone other than herself.

Finishing off her food, she pushed the plate away, taking a sip of her drink. Claire grinned as Nathan mentioned Romeo and Juliet as she had before, tilting her head to the side. A small chuckle escaped her lips as her eyes locked with his. “You better not be goin’ an’ dyin’. Else I gotta be livin’ next to that brother of yours for the rest of my life. Don’ you be puttin’ me through that kinda hell, Nathan Browne.” She teased, leaning forward and taking his hand into her own.

As he suggested them taking the time to think about eloping, she mulled over his words for a few moments. She bit at her lip, realizing that this probably was the best thing to do. She looked around the restaurant, as if to make sure there was no one listening. Here and there she recognized people from town and there wasn’t anyway she wanted something like her and Nathan eloping getting out. If the news was fed to the right people, it would be out in a matter of days. “Sounds perfect to me,” she whispered and smiled as she looked towards Nathan once more. “All we gotta do is travel a few hours outta here and we’ll be in the clear.” Pausing, she pursed her lips slightly. “An’ you know it’s the right thing. Ain’t no otha way to go ‘bout it. I don’t think my daddy’d be willing to give me any sorta money to pay for a weddin’.” With a look of slight disdain she shrugged gently.

While she was not usually an impatient person, Claire felt as though that this certain situation of taking a few days to rest on the idea of eloping was going to be hard. She’d get through it though; if it meant being with Nathan, she’d do anything, whether or not it happened right away or a long time down the road.

Once he began speaking again, she laughed, shaking her head. “Now my momma wouldn’t mind, just don’ be askin’ my daddy that sorta thing.” With the mention of her mother, a light bulb went off in Claire’s mind. “My momma. Maybe she can help, Nathan. I mean, I’d hate to put her against my daddy, but she’s always been supportive of the idea of us being together...” Her voice trailed as her thoughts did. Even in her mother’s critical condition, Claire was sure that the woman would do anything to help her daughter and Nathan. Snapped from her thoughts, Claire watched as the waitress filled her drink and she nodded her head in a gesture of thanks. “Dessert,” she repeated a Nathan mentioned it and she smiled, nodding her head. “’Course baby. I made sure to bring a lil extra money. I had a feelin’ you’d have some hankerin’ for pie.”

“All of it sounds perfect,” she reassured him, answering his previous question. “S’long as I get to spend the rest o’my life with you, of course.”

The corner of his lips turned upwards as he heard her sigh. Nathan knew what was coming next. She realized that what he was saying was right. His smile broadened when he heard the words, but he didn’t have a chance to comment on it as the waitress came up. How funny it was, even though the two of them were able to go out and have dinner together without worrying about someone tattling on them to their fathers, they still had their secret conversations.

Nathan nearly choked on his drink as she mentioned something about going to Las Vegas to get married. Setting his drink down, he wiped at his face with the napkin in his hand and laughed. “Dang it Claire. You tryin’ to kill me?” He shook his head. “Now, goin’ off to Vegas to get married would cost prolly as much money as a regular ol’ wedding. With the plane tickets n’ all. If we lived closer, hey, then that would be all solved, huh. We’d probably be married already.”

He leaned over the table, kissing her quickly just because he could and nodding as she informed him that he was not to die. “Yes ma’am. I wouldn’t wanna put you through that torture. Hell, I wouldn’t want to put anybody through the torture of callin my brother their neighbor. At least right now ya got me to make up for him bein’ such an ass.”

While Claire was rolling through her head how to go about eloping, he was thinking of how they were going to manage such a thing. “We can make a day out of it. Say we’re going up to th’ city and.. well, go up there an’ get married.” He smiled, nodding slowly. “We can just go up to the courthouse and tell them we want a marriage license an’ all that. How’s that all work, I wonder.” His eyebrows came together as he attempted to figure out just how to get married without going through the whole process of a wedding. How to Elope. There really should be something like a pamphlet, or at least something on the internet that explained all of that.

Nathan really wasn’t paying attention to her today. He didn’t know what was wrong. Maybe he was just hungry and now that he got his steak, he still wasn’t paying attention. Or else, he was thinking too hard. There he went again, off on a mental tangent as she mentioned her mother. He tilted his head, looking at his girlfriend.. should he call her his fiancé because it’s inevitable that they were going to get married, with their fathers’ blessing or not. “You think your momma’ll help us out? I mean like, with off tryin’ to figure out what to do first and.. when to go off n’ get married?”

The Browne thought about it and, well, he actually thought that would work. He loved Claire’s mother. Seeing just how much she had taken a turn for the worst since he had stood in the Griffith living room and expressed his love for Claire up to now hurt him. It hurt Claire, and that made his heart pain even worse.

He smiled gently as she agreed to have some chocolate pie with him and he kissed her hand once again. “Good t’know you’ll put up with me n’ my addiction to chocolate pie for th’ rest a your life.” He joked, getting the waitress’ attention and ordered a piece, along with the check.

Tilting to the side, he pulled his wallet out of his pocket, leaving a couple dollars for a tip for the woman, seeing what else he had in there. “How much was it?” He questioned Claire as the check and the pie was brought to them. “An’ where we goin after this?”

Try as she might, Claire wasn’t able to hold in her laughter as Nathan nearly choked on his soda. She bit at her lip in a guilty matter, feeling bad for laughing at him now. “Sorry, baby,” she apologized, leaning across the table and pressing a kiss to his cheek. “An’ you know I would never do somethin’ like that. Goin’ off to Vegas.” The thought was kind of funny, actually. That would definitely cause suspicion to arise in the Browne and Griffith homes, if they told their families they were going out of state – to Vegas, nonetheless. Of course, that would be obvious right then and there what their intentions were. As he, too, stole a kiss, she smiled gently. God, she loved being able to do that in public.

Claire didn’t exactly know how this whole eloping business was going to work; she didn’t know if they had to get a marriage license first or if it could all just happen in one day, like Nathan suggested. Maybe this would take multiple trips to the city – but she hoped not. She had a hunch that her father, as well as Nathan’s, would question the pair’s multiple trips into the city. Maybe Claire was just paranoid; maybe she worried over something that really needn’t be worried about. With a small shake of her head to Nathan’s words, her worrisome thoughts fluttered away.

“No idea how all that stuff’s gonna work.” She shrugged and sighed gently. “We can figure it out, though. I mean, I got some time off from school comin’ up... So maybe we can take a trip up there then?” She let a small smile curve her lips upward, the hopeful tone etching her words mirrored her expression. “I mean, unless that’s a little too soon, it’s a couple weeks away, but we might as well take the chance, right?” No better time than the present, right? With that in mind, she figured she’d have to talk to her momma soon if they were going to go down that road of asking for her help.

Again, Claire shrugged in response to Nathan’s question. “I’m guessin’ she’d be pretty willin’ to help us out. I mean, I’d like to have at least her a part of it, yanno? If anyone, I think my momma’d be the best person to go to.” The most important person involved would be her mother, and even if she didn’t have her father’s approval, all that would keep her going was the assurance of her mother.

“I guess I am gonna have to put up with it! S’long as you don’t put that addiction before me, of course,” she teased him, grinning. Once more she nodded in thanks to the waitress as she brought the check and Claire let her hand fall from Nathans as she took the slip of paper into her hands. Claire shrugged as he questioned her, “’bout 30 bucks, ain’t too bad.” Nonchalantly, she spoke, as she took her wallet out her bag, taking out the necessary bills and placing them with the check near the end of the table.

When he questioned her, she smiled gently. “Now that’s up to you, baby. Wherever you wanna go.”

He made face at her as she giggled at him choking on his drink. “Yeah, I think if we tell our families that we’re headin’ off to Las Vegas, they’ll figure out what we’re gonna go do. I mean, it ain’t like we’re goin’ to gamble.” They weren’t even old enough to do that. When they shared those brief kisses, Nathan couldn’t wipe the smile off his face. This situation was much better than having to stay in the barn, worrying through the night that one of their siblings would sneak in and catch them.

Now all they had to worry about was the waitress or somewhere near by figuring out what they were talking about and it spread all the way to their fathers before they had a chance to go off and get married. “We can prolly look up things on the internet. I mean, they got everythin’ on the internet. I bet there’s books on elopin’ or something.” He chuckled, half joking. Nathan couldn’t imagine someone taking the time to write a book on how to elope.

“A couple weeks from now is okay with me, Darlin’. Since we already got the idea in our heads, I don’ think it’s gonna go away.” He stated, finishing off his drink while watching her carefully. The last thing he wanted was to choke on the beverage again. Setting the empty glass down, he tapped his fingers on the table. “I bet I can get my daddy to get another check in between here n’ now. Or, at least b’fore we go up to figure all of that out. That’ll be more money for us. I’m figurin.. we just say we wanna get out or somethin’..”

This whole idea of eloping was a whole lot more than he had originally thought. But Claire seemed to have it in her head that was what they should do and, he couldn’t really argue with her once she got her mind set on something. Especially an easier way for them to be married and be together. Since the check was only thirty dollars, he set his wallet in his back pocket without getting any out. The two had an agreement to things costing more than thirty would be split between them. The rest… well, usually they had a discussion on who was going to pay. He ate his pie, giving Claire half of it before sliding out of the booth and holding out his hand to help her out.

Giving a wave to the waitress and telling her there was a tip on the table for her, he walked out of the restaurant with his girlfriend/fiancé. “You think maybe we should go talk to your momma today? I mean, since we already got the rest of the night all clear. You ain’t got no homework right now. Maybe we should go talk to her about it all and see if she’ll help us..” Nathan said, pulling the truck keys out of his pocket, twirling them around as he went to the passenger side of the truck to help her in, giving her a long kiss since they were out of the restaurant. He didn’t want to be impolite and make anyone lose their appetite over the two of them showing that they loved each other. And.. he didn’t want to draw attention to themselves when they were talking about eloping. “Your lips taste like chocolate pie.” He teased, getting in the truck and starting it up, looking to her. “To your momma’s?”

The idea of someone even bothering to write a book about eloping made Claire laugh, she even attempted to stifle a snort. Her nose crinkled the slightest bit a she laughed and smiled and shook her head gently. “I’ll believe it when I see it! I don’t think anybody’d really be wastin’ their tie doin’ something like that.” Although, a book or source from the internet would certainly be helpful for the pair. But Claire was pretty sure they’d get all the help they needed from her momma.

Claire grinned as he agreed to her suggestion and she shifted gleefully in her seat. Maybe, she thought, this impromptu wedding would better her condition; maybe all of the happiness it would bring would outweigh all the stress that would be piled on them afterwards. God, she sure hoped not. For now, though, all Claire wanted to worry about was finding a place to get married and getting married. She didn’t dare to think about the anger that would be coming from both families – well, both fathers mostly as well as Michael. “Ya think you can do that?” She asked, tilting a brow upward. “Oh, that’d be great. I got some money saved up too... An’ you’re right, we can say we wanna... go see a play for Romeo an’ Juliet or somethin’.” She couldn’t help but laugh at the idea as she reminisced about their days holed up in the loft of his barn reading the play.

Nathan thought exactly right; Claire was not going to give up on this hope of eloping. Not when it meant them being together as husband and wife sooner than expected. And after that, they’d deal with the whole family problem. At least their parents wouldn’t be able to treat them like children anymore, right? They were pushing into adulthood quickly and their marriage would affirm that further.

Claire ate her half of the pie happily, but by the time she was done, she was stuffed. As he helped her out of the booth and she’d clasped her hands with his, she groaned slightly and laughed at herself. “I swear I just gained five pounds or somethin’. Promise you’ll still love me when I’m fat?” She teased as she repeated his own question from earlier. “I mean, it’s gonna happen, ‘cos one day there’s gonna be lil Brownes runnin’ around... Well... Wherever the heck we’re gonna be livin.” Her brows furrowed as the thought entered her mind once more. Ah well – there was no use in worrying about it right now. That was something they’d deal with later on.

Nodding her head to Nathan’s words, Claire climbed into the truck; she let her emerald gaze search upward to him and she was just about to speak when he caught her lips in a kiss. Claire couldn’t help but smile; she touched her hand to his cheek and the other at his side. Her fingers clung to the fabric of his shirt until he pulled away. As she buckled herself into the seat now, she let out a how of laughter at his comment. “Of course, Nathan Browne, only you’d think to say somethin’ like that. I guess it’s better than sayin’ they taste like onions or something.” Once more she teased him and proceeded to kiss him briefly. “To momma’s house we go.” And soon enough, they were out of the parking lot and once more off to the Griffith’s.

Nathan grinned as he watched her get tickled about people publishing books on elopement. That little crinkle in her nose was always cute to him. It was one of the first things he liked about her. Well, one of the first things that he could remember liking and thinking that he really could date this girl despite his father telling him not to. To think, just because of a wrinkle of her nose when she grinned was the cause of him defying his family’s wishes and risking being kicked out of the Browne household. The crazy things people do for love, huh?

“Yes’m. I can ask for that. An’ he’ll give it to me. Cause I’ll tell Momma that I need a lil bit a money. Since I’m th’ baby, I’ll get it.” He winked at her, tilting his head as he thought. What exactly would they tell their families? It wouldn’t exactly matter with her mother, but there were so many they had to lie to. Not lie, persay, just.. Avoid the truth. And after they got married, it wouldn’t matter. If Nathan’s family called him and asked what he was doing up in the city so long, he’d just tell them, he was spending time with his wife. That sure would throw them for a loop now wouldn’t it?

He chuckled as that thought crossed his mind, and from Claire’s words too. “I’ll still love you. But, not the size of a tractor, since you said you wouldn’t love me if I was that size.” He replied, smiling broadly when she mentioned something about little Brownes running around. “There’s somethin’ that ain’t really crossed my mind in awhile. Th’ whole thing a kids. Guess we should be hopin’ they’ll look like you, huh.” Nathan had completely missed the fact that she had mentioned something about where they would be living after they got married. He was in a great mood right now. He and Claire were talking about going off and getting married, and now she brought up the subject of having kids, even if it was in passing. The idea made him excited and really nervous at the same time. More than thinking about running up to the city and getting married without anyone but Claire’s mother knowing.

It was then that he had to kiss her. He couldn’t help himself. Of course, she made his heart race as she gripped onto his shirt and caused the kiss to last a bit longer than he had originally intended. Nathan got a grip on himself though and smiled at her. “Well, Darlin’. I can’t help it. If your lips taste like chocolate pie, it’ll help me with my addiction. Whenever I want a piece all I gotta do is kiss you. I say that’s pretty good for you now ain’t it?” He smiled.

Soon enough they were at the Griffith’s home. It seemed to take a lot less time to get there than it did to get into town. But then again, it always seemed like that. Even the very rare and very dangerous times the two of them had snuck into town late at night to go get some ice cream or something of the sort. Sliding out of the truck once again, Nathan glanced over across the way to see his house and noticed no one was out. Well that was good. He really didn’t want Michael wandering over this way and trying to figure out why he wasn’t just dropping off Claire and coming home.

Slipping his hand into Claire’s, he followed her up the stairs and through the door. “Darlin’, you don’t think she’ll tell on us, will ya?” He whispered to her while they were looking for her mother.

While Claire had obviously thought about having a family with Nathan one day - many times, too - she never gave it thorough thought. The idea of kids almost scared her in a way. She didn't fear, like most, that she would be a bad parent, but rather that her disorder would be passed down to her children as well just as it had been to her. The thing Claire would hate the most would have to one day see her children go through what she had watched her mother go through. Even so, she still longed to have a family. Claire couldn't help but laugh at Nathan's comment and she shook her head. "You hush." She told him firmly, though a sly smile spread across her lips. "Don' pretend that you don't know that you're handsome. An' plus, I don't think they're gonna want any o' my genes."

Nathan sure had a knack for making her laugh - and he did it so effortlessly, too. That had to have been one of the things that made her like him, even when they were young. "Yeah, it sure works for me. Means that I don't have to burn through my money buyin' you chocolate pie everytime I take you out." Claire teased him with a light laugh.

The conversation carried on as they drove from the steak house to the Griffith's. Claire couldn't believe the short time that it took and soon enough a knot was welling in the pit of her stomach. She wasn't afraid so much that her mother wouldn't keep the secret, but she was afraid that her mother wouldn't be in a well enough state to help them. Mrs. Griffith was the only person Claire could think to go to for help - her friends from high school would be complete blabber mouths (at least the ones who'd stayed in town) and aside from that there was merely Beth and Brittney... And hell would have to freeze over for that to happen.

Claire hopped from the truck easily as they arrived in front of her house, swinging her bag over her shoulder. The house seemed to loom over her somewhat ominously as she stared it down. Why was she so scared? There was no reason for it, after all. It wasn't as if they were approaching her father. Now that would give her reason to be afraid.

She was somewhat startled as Nathan came around the truck and took her hand, but the gesture made her feel at ease all the same. Claire looked to him and squeezed his hand slightly as she led him up the stairs and into the house. She bit at her lip and thought over his question as she threw her purse onto one of the nearby chairs. "I don' think so. I mean, I'm sure she'd realize that it'd just be better to keep it secret right now." The girl shrugged. In all honesty, she didn't really think about what her mother would do or say when Claire and Nathan proposed the idea of eloping. All she could hope for was a positive reaction.

Claire led Nathan into the kitchen, peeking in and not finding her mother - or her father, for that matter. She quirked a brow. He was probably out, making sure everything was safe and secure on his side of the fence. "She's probably upstairs," Claire mused and tugged Nathan in that direction. Once upstairs, Claire meandered down the hallway quietly, knocking on the door once before hearing assurance to come in. Slowly, she creaked open the door, smiling as she saw her mother sitting in the rocking chair near her window, watching as the stars began to appear in the sky.

The older woman looked to the pair who stood in the doorway and smiled. Claire held many of the woman's facial features; but sadly, Claire could only hope the sadness etched in the older woman's features would not be so apparent in her own expressions so early. "Well, Nathan Browne, it's a fancy seein' you here. What brings you two up here, Claire?" Mrs. Griffith spoke, not moving from her seat. Instead, Claire decided to close the door behind her, moving further into the bedroom. Her hand clutched tighter to Nathan's in an attempt to ease her nerves.

"Momma, Nathan an' I have something to.. well, ask and tell ya. But you gotta promise you won't tell daddy, 'cos he'd just fly off the handle." With a sigh, she released the weight on her shoulders. She looked to Nathan for guidance now, not able to tell her mother that she was planning to elope with the young man who she'd been in love with since she was young.

"Well, go 'head, baby," the older woman spoke now, her voice soft as she looked to her daughter and Nathan. "I ain't got all night. An' you two just can't sit there starin' at each other all night, either."

ooc; so this is longer than I expected.. but I wanted to get in something before I left. <3
