[nathan&claire] so baby drive slow til we run out of road; in this one horse town, i wanna stay right here.
Considering certain circumstances, a year may pass slowly or quite the opposite. It all depends on how the year is spent. Within the year Claire had
been in the city, the days and what made her days dragged by so slowly she wasn’t sure if she’d ever be able to return home to Nathan. However, this
year that she’d spent back at home with him didn’t go by so slow. At the same time, it wasn’t passing her by quickly either. Perhaps it was the fact
that for once, most everything seemed at ease.
Once Craig paid his little visit and Claire realized what was going on, she was okay. Well, perhaps that was a slight understatement. It would be a
lie to say that she was okay. With her “sickness” (as her dad loved to politely put it), she hadn’t reacted wonderfully to the fact her father tried
ruining her relationship with Nathan. She was sure that it had taken all Nathan had in him to calm her down and keep her from harming either Craig or
her own father. It took her a while to actually begin speaking to her father again, but she wasn’t really one for holding grudges. Odd enough, it took
a month for her to speak to Craig again. She didn’t know how or why her dad would influence him to try and “steal” her (as juvenile as it sounds), but
to this day she didn’t understand it. Perhaps she never would.
But now, Claire didn’t have any complaints about her life. All was going well, save for the few episodes she would go through, and the fact that her
own mother wasn’t getting any better. Sadly, her medication failed to help and unfortunately, she would blow up at poor Nathan half of the time, or
she’d end up in a down mood. “Baby, don’t take it personally,” she’d reassure him each and every time. She didn’t want to make it seem like was
personal, and she was always afraid that it’d seem that way. Claire knew that she loved Nathan more than life itself, and was sure they’d spend the
rest of their lives together. If only their families would fully accept the couple.
Then again, she was sure that wouldn’t stop them. On her side of the family though, she really only needed the acceptance of her father. Her ailing
mother was more than okay with the relationship Claire had with Nathan. In fact, she’d informed Claire she sensed there was something going on. She
said Claire always had this glint in her eyes, as if there was something she was hiding from the rest of them.
“That glint’s still there, but its different now,” the quiet woman would say, smiling up at her daughter. But even as she loved those little talks
she’d have with her mother, it only reminded her of how it wouldn’t be long before her mother would be gone. However, it wasn’t often she thought
about it, but for whatever reason it was entering her mind now as she sat in front of her vanity. She and Nathan were going to be going out that
night, just for dinner like the usually would do when they weren’t alternating going to family meals.
Chances were since she was going out her father was still going to grill her about it. Whatever, she was used to it by now.
The reflection she saw in her mirror seemed to not be much different. She looked older, slightly, not much. It was hard to believe that soon she’d be
pushing twenty. Maybe time really did pass her by quickly. By now, she’d grown her hair and cut it once more. Now it rested just a few inches below
her shoulders. Still not fond of make up, she merely wore mascara and some blush. The girl brought the brush to her blonde strands of hair as her
emerald eyes wandered to fall on the small orange bottle that was beginning to run low on her medication. As soon as she set her brush down, she took
the bottle and popped it open, taking a pill and dry-swallowing it.
Alright, maybe that wasn’t the best way to take it, but she knew that if she didn’t take it she’d end up forgetting. Especially since she’d probably
be out for a while, and since she and Nathan were going to be in public, she was sure the pair of them wouldn’t want to go through one of her
‘episodes’. There had been times she’d gone without medication before, but it didn’t end pretty; so it was better that she just take it now without
anything to wash it down. Although, she nearly gagged though from the feeling in her throat, but she shook it off.
Claire stood and rummaged to find a pair of flats to put on, grabbing her bag and throwing it over her shoulder before going downstairs. She was ready
to slip out the front door without being noticed when she heard the floor creak under her father’s weight. The blonde girl turned around to see her
father with a beer in his hand, still in his work clothes. “You goin’ out tonight with Nathan?” He questioned, although this was what he always asked,
and she gave her usual answer.
First she nodded, turning around and releasing her hand from the door knob. “Yep, like I usually do, Papa.” She gave her dad a warm smile before
stepping over and pressing a kiss to his cheek. “I won’t be late, either. Tell Mama I love her and I’ll talk to her tomorrow.” Claire nearly blasted
towards the door, but not too hastily as she slipped out. In all honesty, it was still difficult for her to talk to her father in some ways. The way
he spoke about Nathan angered her somewhat. It was like he said her boyfriend’s name with disgust. But she couldn’t do a thing about it.
Claire knew, as she headed towards the Browne home, that she would in fact have to speak to her mother tomorrow. This thought left knots twisting in
the pit of her stomach but soon she reached Nathan’s home and headed towards the front door. She rapped her knuckles lightly on the front door and
soon his mother was answering the door. Mrs. Browne smiled politely, although possibly not willingly, at the shorter girl. “Hi Claire, come on in,”
she said nicely and Claire smiled, walking into the Browne home. “Do you want me to go get Nathan?”
“Naw, that’s alright, Mrs. Browne. I’ll go up an’ get ‘em myself, thanks.” Claire spoke and headed towards the staircase. Reaching his door she tapped
on it lightly before opening it, peeking in with that bright smile of hers on her face. “You ready to leave, baby?”
I suggest we imbibe copious
